History:
In 1972, architect Frank Gehry designed the Wiggle Chair, an innovative piece made entirely of corrugated cardboard. The chair is part of the Easy Edges collection, in which Gehry explored the use of everyday, inexpensive materials to create furniture with a modern and functional design. His goal was to demonstrate that good design does not require expensive materials to be attractive and durable.
The chair stands out for its flowing curves and sculptural form, achieved by stacking and cutting layers of cardboard. Despite its seemingly fragile appearance, the Wiggle Chair is surprisingly strong and comfortable, capable of supporting the weight of an adult. The design challenged conventions by showing that a material traditionally considered disposable could be transformed into a durable and artistic object.
This piece became an icon of 20th-century design and marked a shift in the way materials were understood in industrial design. The Wiggle Chair not only reflects Gehry’s creativity and ingenuity, but also continues to inspire designers to experiment with new ideas and materials, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
