History:
The Wassily Chair was designed in 1925 by Hungarian architect and designer Marcel Breuer during his time at the Bauhaus school in Germany, a movement that sought to unite art, design, and functionality. It was one of the first chairs to use bent tubular steel for its structure, inspired by bicycle frames, making it lightweight, strong, and visually innovative. Its design broke away from the heavy, solid forms of traditional furniture, introducing a modern industrial aesthetic that profoundly influenced 20th-century furniture design.
The name “Wassily” was not given by Breuer, but later by the manufacturer in honor of painter Wassily Kandinsky, a close friend of Breuer and one of the most influential professors at the Bauhaus. The chair is characterized by its tubular steel frame and seat surfaces made of leather straps or fabric, offering a unique combination of lightness and comfort. Its minimalist and functional design became a symbol of modernity and technological progress in furniture.
Over the years, the Wassily Chair has remained an icon of modern design and continues to be produced by various manufacturers, always respecting the original concept. It is included in the collections of major modern art and design museums around the world, valued for both its aesthetic and historical significance. The Wassily Chair represents not only a technological breakthrough in furniture manufacturing, but also a successful fusion of art and functionality.
