History
The Teatro Colón is one of the most renowned buildings in Latin America, not only because its formal qualities harmonize with Buenos Aires’ elegant urban landscape, but also because its extraordinary technical quality makes it one of the five opera houses with the best acoustics in the world, admired by singers and orchestra conductors alike.
Inspired by the style of the Paris Opera, it is a clear example of academic eclecticism, faithfully incorporating architectural elements of Italian and French origin.
The impressive building reflects the architectural rules and trends of its time. It cannot be defined by a single style, but rather by the eclecticism typical of early 20th-century architecture. Features of the Italian Renaissance are combined with the solidity and spatial organization of German architecture, together with the grace, variety, and boldness characteristic of French architecture.
For a lyric theater, acoustic quality is its greatest virtue. Achieving it required architectural mastery and applied scientific knowledge, directing sound toward the audience from any location in the hall. The remarkable acoustics result from the resonance chamber and the special curves that reflect sound, together with the architectural proportions of the auditorium and the quality of the materials used.
