History:
The Empire State Building was born during New York’s early 1930s “race to the sky.” Constructed in a record time of approximately 410 days between 1930 and its inauguration on May 1, 1931, it rises 102 stories, reaching 381 meters to the roof (443 meters including the antenna). It remained the tallest building in the world until 1970. Built during the Great Depression, it was ironically nicknamed the “Empty State Building” due to its low initial occupancy, but it soon became the defining icon of the New York skyline.
Designed in the Art Deco style, its Indiana limestone and aluminum façade emphasizes verticality through a series of stepped setbacks that taper the mass toward the crown. The lobby, finished with polished marbles and geometric ornamentation, reflects the technological optimism of the era. The project, led by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, prioritized a modular steel structure and highly efficient construction logistics to accelerate schedule and reduce costs without sacrificing elegance.
The upper mast was originally conceived as a mooring point for dirigibles—a gesture more symbolic than practical. The building is struck by lightning dozens of times each year, and its thematic lighting changes colors to mark special dates and events. In 1933, it became a cultural icon after co-starring in King Kong, cementing its place in popular imagination. Today, following a major energy-efficiency retrofit, it successfully blends legend and sustainability, maintaining its Art Deco aura while remaining one of the most visited observation decks in the world (86th and 102nd floors).
