History:
The Colosseum was built following the architectural style of Ancient Rome. Its construction took between seven and eight years, making it one of the largest and most complex structures of its time. The columns were built using three different classical orders.
The Doric order was used for the columns on the ground level, where the wealthiest Romans were seated. The Ionic order was used for the second level, while the Corinthian order was used on the third level, which was intended for the general public.
The building originally had two walls: an inner wall and an outer wall. The outer wall was severely damaged during the earthquake of 1349, which is why today only parts of it remain visible.
The Colosseum was used for nearly 500 years, hosting gladiator fights and many other public spectacles such as naumachiae (mock naval battles), animal hunts, executions, recreations of famous battles, and theatrical performances based on classical mythology.
