History:
A symbol of the power and prosperity of the Tuscan capital, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore amazed the world with its colossal dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.
Construction began in 1296 under the direction of Arnolfo di Cambio. In 1420, work started on the dome, which became the city’s most iconic and harmonious landmark. Brunelleschi, considered the first Renaissance architect, faced not only artistic but also major technical challenges. Traditional construction methods were insufficient to support the dome’s enormous weight. After years of study, he developed an innovative masonry system that allowed the dome to support itself during construction.
The cathedral is decorated with works by artists such as Uccello, Donatello, Nanni di Banco, and Ghirlandaio. It represents a key example of the transition from the Gothic world to a new spirit of scientific and aesthetic exploration, establishing Italy as the center of a new cultural era.
