History:
The Sagrada Familia is one of the most iconic Catholic churches, located in the city of Barcelona, Spain. The temple was designed by Antoni Gaudí in the late 19th century.
The entire monument is conceived around two fundamental principles that deeply inspired the architect: Christian symbolism and the observation of nature. For this reason, the basilica cannot be fully understood without considering both elements. Gaudí incorporated symbols and allegories from the Bible, relating them structurally, formally, and symbolically to natural forms.
Instead of working with traditional plans, Gaudí developed three-dimensional models to guide the project. One of his techniques involved creating forms using a system of hanging chains (catenary models). By placing a mirror beneath these models, he could study the inverted reflection, allowing him to visualize and design the structure of the building.
The church is built on a Latin cross plan, forming five naves. At the crossing, there is a semicircular apse that crowns the space.
Gaudí also designed 18 towers. The tallest one represents Jesus Christ, while the others symbolize the Apostles, the Evangelists, and the Virgin Mary.
The organic appearance of both the façades and the interior stems from Gaudí’s observation of natural geometry. It is no coincidence that the columns resemble tree trunks, branches, shells, and many other natural elements.
